“Rome wasn’t built in one day,” is a very popular quote that people often use to tell others to be patient. However, I think the addition by James Clear’s blog (not sure if this the exact correct citation) is very clever and incredibly important. The original quote stresses patience, but when patient it is also very easy to be distracted. For example, if you know you have a goal that you would normally take a person 15 years, it is very easy for someone to be complacent and put off the work instead of establishing the necessary habits to accomplish the task.
In my opinion, the concept of laying bricks every hour means that “Rome”, or whatever your goal is, is not going to come into fruition without good ole’ hard work. As someone who has just started out my career, it is very easy to want to be a manager or be an engineer with the knowledge of multiple years of experience. I want to feel like I have the knowledge and the experience to immediately make an impact. However, you have to pay your dues and grow. Everyone does it. Nothing great is ever accomplished without hard work.
I think this quote also applies to your everyday life as well. When trying to develop a habit, a hobby or a relationship you always also need patience. In order to be good at anything in life, you need to practice it over and over again. I understand that it is incredibly easy to look over your shoulder and see your peers, and look at what you currently don’t have and fixate on that. Instead, focus on what you do have and be grateful. As I said in my last post, life is a series of moments; cherish them and always focus on the positives.
However, keep laying your brick and soon enough you will get there! And once you get there, you will look back at your accomplishment and will cherish the journey it takes to get there.
